Isla Mujeres
Declared a sacred place by the Mayans centuries ago to worship the goddess Ixchel (the goddess of fertility), Isla Mujeres was christened in 1517 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, who stumbled upon the island and found female figurines there. Today, it is a key part of the Mexican Caribbean's tourist attractions, celebrated for its stunning natural beauty and the warmth of its people.
Located just off the coast of Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a 7.5 km long island with an average width of 500 meters. It offers a wealth of experiences, including natural parks, specialty restaurants serving international and regional cuisine, bars with live music, beach clubs, dolphin swims, and an endless list of things to discover.
Isla Mujeres Center: Upon arrival, you'll feel the unique charm of this town. Explore its cobblestone streets and visit the church, the main square, the City Hall, and the House of Culture. The downtown area is filled with artisan shops, restaurants, and bars with live music. At sunset, you can enjoy a delicious dinner on the beach or join one of the festivals with folk dances and craft shows.
Swimming with Dolphins: A truly unforgettable and therapeutic experience. The friendly and sociable nature of dolphins makes it possible for almost anyone to interact with them, even without knowing how to swim. You can pet a dolphin, get a kiss, or participate in professional-level dives.
Turtle Farm: This is a fantastic attraction where you can see adult turtles in a protected, vulnerable state. Young turtles are incubated until they are strong enough for survival. In a beautiful conservation effort, local schoolchildren participate in their release into the sea.
Hacienda Mundaca: The former residence of the pirate Fermín Mundaca. The site is steeped in legends and features a small zoo with local wildlife and beautiful gardens, perfect for a peaceful walk.
Isla Contoy: Located 45 minutes north of Isla Mujeres, this island is a nature reserve and a "wildlife refuge." It provides a sanctuary for rare species of turtles and numerous colonies of birds, allowing them to breed and nest without human harassment.
Garrafón Park: Named for the clarity and stillness of its waters, Garrafón Park is a perfect spot for swimming or snorkeling on a reef where the ocean current is almost imperceptible. You can also enjoy a relaxing kayak ride, spot tropical fish, or try ziplining over the sea.
Punta Sur: Located at the easternmost point of Mexico, this is where you'll receive the country's first sun rays each morning. With towering cliffs reaching up to 20 meters above sea level, it offers majestic sunrises and spectacular views of the Cancun skyline and the turquoise Caribbean Sea.
Temple of the Goddess Ixchel: Located at Punta Sur, this temple was a main shrine for the goddess of the moon, love, and fertility. Due to its high location on the cliffs, the building also served as a beacon for trade ships.
